What Is Learning Leadership
How leaders create the conditions for learning to thrive.
Learning Leadership is about more than championing learning—it is about modelling it. Leaders shape whether curiosity, reflection, experimentation, and adaptation become everyday practice or remain good intentions. Through the way they make decisions, distribute power, and respond to uncertainty, leaders create the conditions that enable learning to flourish across the organization.
When leadership consistently values learning, people feel safer to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and adapt their work. Learning becomes embedded in how the philanthropy operates rather than depending on individual champions or isolated initiatives.
Leaders who model curiosity and continuous learning.
Learning starts with leadership. Embody Learning encourages leaders to demonstrate curiosity, seek feedback, reflect openly on successes and failures, and remain willing to change course when new evidence emerges. When leaders visibly learn themselves, they signal that learning is everyone's responsibility and create permission for others to do the same.

1. For each subcomponent under Leadership, the facilitator must ask the participants to define the formal leaders they are thinking about before assessing against the spectrum of maturity. It may be useful to split the conversation: assess first board members and separately C-suite staff.
Leaders make learning a shared priority and responsibility.
Commitment turns learning from an aspiration into an organizational practice. Commit to Learning asks leaders to articulate how learning contributes to effectiveness, establish clear expectations, and hold themselves and others accountable. By aligning strategy, governance, resources, structures, and incentives, leaders make learning a shared responsibility and ensure it informs decisions within the organization and across its partnerships.

Leaders create the space and support for people to learn and experiment.
Learning thrives when people have space to reflect, take thoughtful risks, and explore new ideas. Encourage Learning asks leaders to support honest conversations, model intelligent failure, and protect staff and partners as they experiment. By connecting people to new perspectives, relationships, and opportunities, leaders create an environment where curiosity is welcomed and learning can lead to meaningful change.
